Kathleen Edwards

We saw Kathleen Edwards with special guest Ken Yates tonight at the 04-Center on South Lamar.

Kathleen is a Canadian who did quite well several years ago (her song "Six O'clock News" from the album "Failer(2003)" is one of my favorites). "Asking for Flowers" (2008) is another great song from another great album by the same name. Her voice reminds me a bit of Lucinda Williams — there's a world weariness about it. She retreated from the business for many years but is back with a couple of albums this year. "Covers" (2025) is a collection of cover tunes and "Billionaire" (2025) is new material and will be released later in the year. I have most of her music on CD; the recent stuff on iTunes.

The 04-Center is basically across the street from where we're staying and has music most nights. It's a listening room in a new-style church with chairs rather than pews. They do have a liquor licence (or at least wine and beer) so we're set. Sight lines aren't very good as the audience is not raked (it's a flat auditorium floor). But there's lots of good music here and tonight it's a full house of like minded folk.

The music is minimal production, just guitars and acoustic guitars at that. For me it's often the words that matter. Great lyrics set to simple tunes makes me smile. Kathleen has another guitar with her and her opening act, Ken Yates, joins in to support her. He plays electric, his opening act might have been better received on acoustic guitar.

Of the songs Kathleen does one really sticks in my memory, which I can't find, is about how "The Maple Leafs Suck". The hockey team from Toronto that hasn't wone the Stanley Cup since god knows when (1967). Yet folks still cheer them on...
